As you scale your business, you’ll come to a point where adding more remote workers makes sense. Not only will you need to cover all your bases, but the increased workload of a growing business will demand that you add more workers to strengthen your weakest points and add the ability to handle larger responsibilities.
Perhaps you need more workers to expand your services, or need international workers to set up a 24/7 customer service program to deal with international clients. Whatever the case, adding more workers as you scale your business can boost your business goals, but will also require a larger degree of effort on your part.
As someone who has hired hundreds of remote workers, I can say that it’s been a challenge to keep track of workers on an individual basis and deal with oversight issues that may arise. However, it’s worth it to watch your business grow and have a venerable group of remote workers at your back. The experience you’ll gain dealing with the remote workers will come in handy as you grow as a business owner as well!
How to Choose the Best Remote Workers
So if you’re planning on a hiring spree, you’ll need to first judge what are the most important areas of your business that require the use of remote workers. Having more workers does not automatically mean your business will scale right away. You’ll need to be smart about how you utilize the workers and make use of their skill-sets.
Start with an Assistant
It’s during this point that I’d recommend hiring a skilled and tested virtual assistant. This is someone who can help you manage the questions and concerns of other remote workers. You can have one or multiple assistants depending on your needs. They’ll help you with managing the workers and making sure things are running smoothly.
Virtual assistants can even take on the responsibility of hiring new workers, giving you more time to commit to the more pressing concerns of your business. Of course, this doesn’t mean you leave these things to your assistants and never greet new workers. You’ll still want to be a presence in the workers’ lives, even if it’s just checking to make sure they are on task. Leaving workers alone for days on end could lead to oversight problems down the road, especially if you have a larger workforce.
Remote Worker Management Best Practices
Here are a few more tips that can help anchor the larger workforce:
- Keep up Communication: As stated earlier, you’ll want to be an active part of workers’ weekly routine. You could do the bare minimum of getting to know a worker, and if you’re mass-hiring then this may sound like the easier thing to do. But remember, you are hiring these workers for YOUR business, where they will be completing tasks and representing your company. In a way, you’d probably want to get to know the workers a bit.
You won’t need to spend countless hours doing this, but you will need to spend a couple minutes here or there throughout the week to get a sense of how workers are performing.
- Build a System of Management: Having a larger workforce will take a lot of energy to tackle and maintain. If you’re doing it alone, you may find yourself becoming burned out trying to keep everyone together and on task.
This is where you use virtual assistants to help you manage the workload of administrating workers. If a worker has a question and continuously goes to you for help, you may find yourself exasperated trying to solve their issues. Now magnify that by 50 and see how well you do when those bumps and bruises come along.
Have workers send their concerns or questions to virtual assistants, and let them deal with the issues. They’ll be able to deal with them, and tell you if anything important comes up.
- Vet through the Workforce: Always make sure any workers you hire are skilled and ready for the tasks you’ll be giving them. No one wants to spend time and money hiring workers who are only in this for a quick buck or for a few weeks, and having a high turnover rate based on this can damage worker cohesion and culture. A workforce that sticks together and makes connections with each other will be far more motivated to commit to your brand than one who sees others constantly leaving.
