It has been over four months now since I left my full-time job to work for myself as a freelance writer and business owner. While it hasn’t always been easy, I have fallen in love with the lifestyle. I can work from home in my pajamas (sometimes I do), I set my own working hours, and I control my own destiny by choosing who I want to work with.

While I do occasionally still check the job boards, this is no longer where I get the majority of my freelancing work. In my experience, the work I got from the boards was low-paying, and the competition was high (especially on the free boards).

  • Cold Pitching

Cold pitching new clients is a great way to reach out to those businesses that do not know you exist. The work I get from cold pitching tends to be lucrative and long-term. However, cold pitching is time-consuming. Before I write a pitch to a prospective client, I have to research the company and decide how I can improve their business. I then have to market myself and prove that I am worth the investment. The conversion is low and often takes months.

  • Freelancing Platforms

Freelancing platforms have increased in popularity as more companies and entrepreneurs have decided to outsource tasks to remote workers. These platforms are great because they connect businesses directly with freelancers looking for work.
